Bishop Kukah in an interview with Channels Television on March 24 said the federal government has failed to give hope to Nigerians on the economic woes currently facing the country.

Kukah, who expressed optimism that things would change for the better urged the federal government to conceive a vision of long and short term plan.

“We must all collectively push forward. This is not the time to blame President Buhari. I think the President should be given a chance. I am convinced that there are good days ahead. But how the government communicates hope to the people is critical and what is lacking so far,” he said.

The bishop noted that war against corruption was laudable, but advised against making it the crux of the present administration.

Kukah pleaded with Nigerians to give the president a chance to deliver on his campaign promises, adding that he should not be blamed so soon.

“The problem that this government has is its inability to devise a vision and a message which contains short and long term plans that can keep the citizens engaged. So far, we have not heard that message.

“It is wonderful that we are fighting corruption. So far, I have been vindicated on what I said that fighting corruption is not a policy. We need to have practical steps about where we are going. Fighting corruption can only be a part of a larger vision. Where we are now is a difficult situation. Nigerians must understand that the wheels of democracy are irreversible,” Kukah said.

The bishop had earlier called on the federal government not to place the inefficiency in the fight against corruption on the church. He made the call while speaking at the national grand finale celebration of the Year for Consecrated Life in Abuja.

Just few weeks ago, Bishop Kukah sent a strong message to churches in the country that are being run with billions of Naira. He accused the catholic churches of sometimes trying to make profit from religiosity and urged them to desist from seeing themselves as business ventures.
