Rio 2016: Poor preparations’ll affect Nigeria’s chances

 Hon. Chibudom Nwuche

PRESIDENT of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Hon. Prince Chibudom Nwuche has alerted that paucity of funds besides inadequate preparation at the disposal of the Federation may cost Nigeria medals at the Rio Olympics in Brazil. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche Hon. Chibudom Nwuche Nwuche, who attributed the inadequate funds at the disposal of the federation to bureaucratic bottleneck, urged government to do away with long bureaucracy around budgetary votes for sports in the country if Nigeria must move forward in sports development. Speaking to journalists in Abuja yesterday, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, insisted that budgetary votes for sports should be pulled out from a central pool in the Ministry of Sports. “I believe that they should reduce the bureaucracy around the votes for sports and direct it towards the federations and the athletes. “They should separate the general pool for ministry officials. The general allowances, travel operations and administration should be kept separate.” That is where the funds can be easily accessible for competitions and athletes training. “So, you find that you need to give that money to the federation directly so as to avoid this kind of thing—the one for athletes and sports development. “We can put the general pool of operations for the sports ministry, they can have an oversight on how it is spent but you must reduce the red tape around money voted for sports in order for athletes to take part in international competitions and prepare on time, “he said.
